Brandon Gryde, Panelist
As Director of Government Affairs for Dance/USA and OPERA America, Brandon represents the membership of both organizations in front of Congress, the White House, and Federal agencies, working on a range of issues that include support for the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts in Education, and tax policy for nonprofits. He previously served as communications director for Youth Service America and director of publications for Jump Street in Harrisburg, PA where he managed local arts grants and launched AND Magazine. Brandon has a B.A. in Ethnomusicology and American Literature and Culture from UCLA and an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State.
Stephanie Milling, Panelist
Stephanie Milling, Head of Dance Education at the University of South Carolina and active arts advocate, received the South Carolina Dance Association’s Arts Advocacy Award in 2012. Dr. Milling helped author the 2010 South Carolina Standards for Dance Education, edited the Curriculum Support Document that accompanies the standards, and chaired the Dance Taskforce to create a model of teacher evaluation for dance educators in South Carolina. She currently serves on the South Carolina Arts Alliance Board of Directors, the Arts Education Council at Americans for the Arts, and grant review panels for the South Carolina Arts Commission.
Alex Sarian, Panelist
As Director of Business Development & Operations for Lincoln Center Education, Alex Sarian oversees all new business strategies, national and international consulting services, budgeting and day-to-day operations for all education, family and community-based programs at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. From Argentina, Sarian was a featured speaker on creativity at the International Baccalaureate’s inaugural TEDx conference at the Ontario Science Centre in Canada, has lectured at Columbia University, Emerson College, Purchase College and serves on the faculty of NYU, Pace University and CUNY, where he’s designed and teaches courses on community engagement, arts education and business. As an advocate, Sarian chairs the arts education council at Americans for the Arts, is a lobbyist in New York State, has held leadership positions on the boards of several nonprofits, and most recently assisted as part of a consortium of cultural leaders engaging mayoral candidates in their vision for arts in New York City public schools.
Lindy Casebier, Moderator
Lindy Casebier of Louisville was appointed Deputy Secretary of the KY Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet by Gov. Steve Beshear in December 2007. Upon graduation from the Uof L School of Music, he taught high school band for fourteen years before moving into administration as district music supervisor for Jefferson County Public Schools. In 1986, Casebier was elected to the KY House of Representatives serving three terms before being elected to the State Senate in 1992 for three terms. In 1997, he was selected to chair the Senate Education Committee and was a key player in the post secondary reform as well as early childhood and elementary and secondary reform initiatives. In 1998, he was appointed by then Gov. Patton to the Education Commission of the States. In 2005, he was appointed by Gov. Fletcher as director of the Office of Arts and Cultural Heritage. As Deputy Secretary, he has been a tireless advocate for the Arts throughout the Commonwealth. Promoting the Arts as vital to education, economic development and basic quality of life issues throughout Kentucky has been his priority.
